Few burials in American history carried as much weight as the one recorded here, a service for an unknown soldier in November 1921. The unidentified American serviceman from World War I was selected from several unmarked sets of remains in France and returned to Arlington National Cemetery, where his tomb was dedicated that month. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented national events, made this glass negative, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
