The subject is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and the record links the picture to a Holy Name gathering there on September 19, 1924. The tomb was dedicated in 1921 to an unidentified American serviceman of the First World War and soon drew visitors and official ceremonies. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital and nearby sites, made the negative, and its glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
