The first permanent guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, dated here to March 25, 1926, marks the point when sentry duty at the Arlington monument became a standing watch. The tomb holds an unidentified American serviceman from World War I, placed at Arlington National Cemetery in 1921. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm whose glass plates recorded the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, and faint streaks on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
