Arlington National Cemetery received the remains of the American soldiers killed at Carrizal, Mexico, in June 1916, and this photograph records their arrival with military honors. The clash at Carrizal pitted U.S. cavalry against Mexican forces during Gen. John J. Pershing's expedition, which had crossed the border to pursue Francisco "Pancho" Villa. The National Photo Company made the glass negative, and its ceremonial composition reflects how the Army marked such losses in the years before the First World War.
