Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels appears in this view of the groundbreaking for the Arlington Amphitheater in March 1915, an early step toward a memorial hall on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac from Washington. The white marble amphitheater, designed by John Russell Pope, was dedicated in 1920 and still hosts ceremonies on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that recorded the city's public life in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, which shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age.
