Workers broke ground on March 1, 1915, at Arlington National Cemetery for the Memorial Amphitheater, a white marble structure designed by Carrère and Hastings as a setting for ceremonies honoring the nation's war dead. Construction stretched past the First World War, and the building was dedicated in 1920. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm whose glass negatives documented the capital and its surroundings in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
