The subject is the dedication of the Scottish Rite Temple at 16th and S Streets in Washington, D.C., in October 1915, when the Southern Jurisdiction of Freemasonry formally opened its headquarters building. Architect John Russell Pope drew on the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus for its monumental massing, a classical reference that still makes the building stand out on the city's skyline. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded Washington street scenes and civic events in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from age, which add a faint texture to the record of the day.
