The title names the American Federation of Labor as the organization behind this 1916 dedication in Washington, D.C., though the National Photo Company supplied it and it has not been independently verified. Founded in 1886 and led for most of its early history by Samuel Gompers, the AFL was the country's largest federation of craft unions, so a ceremony in the capital signaled organized labor's growing public profile. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington street life, official events and ceremonies in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in its original coating.
