The George Washington Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, stands on a hilltop as a monument to the first president, who was a Freemason, and the Masonic fraternity sponsored it. The record dates the scene to 1923, but the negative's own date range runs from 1910 to 1920, so the exact occasion is uncertain. This glass negative came to the collection as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and it shows the streaks and blemishes that come with aging coatings, which can blur fine detail in the ceremony crowd and surroundings.
