Cornerstone laying ceremonies were formal public occasions, and this glass negative records one held for the George Washington Memorial on November 1, 1923. The memorial, a Masonic tribute to Washington, a Freemason himself, was planned for Shooters Hill overlooking Alexandria, Virginia. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from about 1907 to 1932, made the picture, and its glass plates document the dress and ceremony of the period. Streaks and other blemishes on the negative come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
