The cornerstone laying for the George Washington Memorial took place on November 1, 1923, at Shooters Hill above Alexandria, Virginia, marking the formal start of construction on the Masonic tribute. Washington was a Freemason, and the lodges that planned the memorial gathered officials and members for the ceremony. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that recorded public events in the capital region, made the glass negative, which shows streaks and blemishes from the decay of its original coating. The title comes from the studio's own notes and has not been independently verified.
