This glass negative pairs Alfred E. Smith, then governor of New York, with a man listed only as Geo. Sreges of New Jersey, dated October 20, 1923. Smith was governor for much of the 1920s and won the Democratic presidential nomination in 1928, so the picture captures him during his years in state office. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, produced many portraits of politicians and visitors in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
