This glass negative records a portrait of J. Alfred Taylor, identified in the title as a West Virginia man, and it dates from about 1923. The National Photo Company, which worked out of Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made many such studio and news portraits of public figures, so the sitter's name and state set this plate apart from the company's many other views. The record notes that the title comes from information written on the negative sleeve and has not been verified, so the identity should be read with that caveat. The plate also shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass negatives, which were coated by hand and deteriorated over time.
