Dated December 21, 1923, this picture shows an Assistant Postmaster General, a senior official in the Post Office Department in Washington, D.C. The National Photo Company produced many studio and press portraits of government officials in the 1910s and 1920s, and newspapers and magazines used such images for publication. This example is a 5 by 7 inch glass negative, and its record notes streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
