Assistant Attorney General William D. Riter is the subject of this glass negative, which the Library of Congress dates to sometime between 1921 and 1924. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that operated from about 1906 into the early 1930s, produced many formal portraits of government officials during those years, and glass plates were a common medium for studio work of that kind. The record notes streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of the original coating, which are signs of the negative's age. The collection came to the Library as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
