General Charles P. Summerall, then Army Chief of Staff, is shown reviewing trainees at Fort Myer, Virginia, on August 1, 1929. The men were taking part in the Citizens' Military Training Camps, summer programs that let civilians, many of them college students, spend several weeks learning basic soldiering. Fort Myer sits on a bluff above the Potomac across from Washington, so the review took place close to the seat of government. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from about 1906 to 1936, recorded many official events on glass negatives like this one, whose streaks and blemishes come from deterioration of the original coating.
