Dated July 11, 1929, and titled simply "Secty. Adams," this glass negative most likely shows Charles Francis Adams III, who took office as Secretary of the Navy in March of that year, early in Herbert Hoover's administration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio, made a large body of portraits and press work of officials during this period, and the Library of Congress preserved its glass plates. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the surface, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion.
