Photographed as they left church on April 21, 1924, the Secretary and Mrs. Wilbur appear in this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that documented official and everyday life in the capital in the early twentieth century. The title's "Secty." most likely refers to Curtis D. Wilbur, who served as Secretary of the Navy from 1924 to 1929. Glass plates were a common medium for commercial work of the period, and the coating on this negative has deteriorated, leaving streaks and blemishes that are worth noticing. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
