The label on this glass negative names two men, Wilbur and Stefansson, and dates the sitting to April 26, 1924, though the record notes that the title is unverified. The surname may refer to the Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, but the record does not confirm that. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio known for news and portrait pictures in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes are visible because the original coatings have naturally deteriorated over time.
