The title "Adams & Marine ofc." points to a business office rather than a landmark, and the December 9, 1929 date places the picture at the close of that year. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., from about 1906 to 1936, documented the city's streets, buildings and businesses for commercial clients and the public. Because the title came from data the company wrote on the negative and has not been independently verified, the exact firm and location remain uncertain. The glass plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
