A group portrait of public utilities staff, dated November 27, 1929, survives here as a glass negative, a format that recorded fine detail but was fragile and easily damaged. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, made many negatives like this one, and Herbert A. French gave this example to the Library of Congress in 1947. The date falls only weeks after the stock market crash of October 1929, as the economic downturn that became the Great Depression was just beginning. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from age and deterioration of the original coating.
