A group of young women posed at Rajah's Garden on May 22, 1924, in this glass negative. Group portraits of debutantes were a familiar part of the social calendar in the 1920s, when families introduced their daughters to society through a season of parties and presentations. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many such images, and its collection later came to the Library of Congress. The glass may show streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which gives the negative a worn, archival quality.
