This glass negative captures a group of women on December 20, 1920, a date the National Photo Company gave the image, though the title comes from unverified company data. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and produced a large body of pictures of people, streets, and public events. The photograph was taken about four months after the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in August 1920, a period when women's public role was widening. The record does not name the women or the occasion, so the group itself is the main clue. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
