A group from the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the organization founded in Seattle in 1898, stands with President Warren G. Harding in this glass negative. The National Photo Company dated it between 1921 and 1924, the years of Harding's presidency. The studio, based in Washington, D.C., documented officials, visiting groups and public events, so the picture belongs to that steady stream of formal portraits. The end of the original caption has rubbed away, leaving the exact occasion uncertain, and the streaks on the plate reflect the deterioration of its original coatings.
