This glass negative pairs President Warren G. Harding with a group of wounded men, and its title and date place the moment within his first month in office, three weeks after his March 4, 1921, inauguration. The record does not name the location, so the setting is unconfirmed. Care for veterans of the First World War was a pressing national concern in those years, and the Veterans Bureau was created later in 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington-area news photography firm, produced many images of officials and public events, and the glass plate itself shows the streaks and surface wear typical of aging emulsions.
