Florence Harding, the First Lady, is pictured with Andrew W. Mellon, the Treasury Secretary, in this December 1921 view, taken early in the Harding administration that had begun that March. Mellon, a Pittsburgh banker and financier, would serve as Treasury Secretary for more than a decade, through 1932. The National Photo Company made the glass negative, and its record says the names come from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification deserves some caution. Faint streaks and blemishes on the plate reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating.
