A portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Foster, dated June 15, 1921, survives here as a small glass negative, a format that was standard for studio and commercial work before flexible film became common. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm active in the early twentieth century, recorded many local people and events, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The names come from the company's own notes on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. Visible streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth bearing in mind when judging the image.
