Mrs. Alice McKay Kelly is the only sitter named in this record, and the portrait comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that made thousands of glass negatives for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The title and date of June 17, 1921, were supplied by the company itself, though the Library of Congress notes they remain unverified. Alice McKay was the daughter of the New York financier Clarence Mackay, and her connection to the Kelly family is worth noticing for anyone tracing society portraiture of the period. The glass plate shows the streaks and surface wear typical of aging emulsions, which is part of its character as a surviving original.
