Taken on March 25, 1921, about three weeks after Warren G. Harding took the oath as president, this glass negative places the new chief executive among wounded men, a pairing that points to the injuries many Americans were still recovering from after World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that supplied news pictures to newspapers and magazines, made the negative, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
