Three weeks into his presidency, Warren G. Harding appears with a group of wounded men in this glass negative dated March 25, 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed the capital and its visitors during the 1910s and 1920s, made the plate, and its title records only the names and the date. The record does not identify the men or the occasion, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the new administration meeting men likely wounded in the recent war. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating and are part of how the negative looks today.
