The DeGrout family group survives as a glass negative, a fragile format that captured fine detail on a light-sensitive coating spread over a sheet of glass. The Library of Congress dates it only approximately, between 1909 and 1923, based on other negatives in the same range, and the title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which have not been independently verified. The company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of portraits and views for public and commercial use. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coating over time.
