This glass negative is titled "C & P Tel. Co.," a shorthand for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company, the Bell System operating company that provided telephone service across Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, recorded the city and its businesses in the early twentieth century, and this image likely reflects that effort, though the title comes from unverified notes on the negative or its sleeve. The glass plate has streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which are visible traces of its age.
