Two unidentified people sit at a desk with a typewriter, a scene of everyday office work preserved on a small glass negative. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of pictures of the city and its institutions in the early twentieth century, and this negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Because the Library's staff devised the title, the sitters and the exact office remain unknown. Look closely and you will see streaks and blemishes, the result of the glass plate's coating deteriorating over time.
