No name survives for this woman scientist, and the title comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. The company was a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, known for a large body of portraits and news photographs. The date, between 1909 and 1923, is inferred from neighboring negatives in the same group, which Herbert A. French gave to the Library of Congress in 1947. Expect streaks and blemishes on the glass, the result of natural deterioration in the original coating.
