A small child poses with a tuba, an instrument far larger than the player, and the contrast is what makes the picture memorable. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded city life in the early twentieth century, and the catalog dates it to between 1909 and 1923. Glass plates of this kind were prone to chemical breakdown of their coatings, so faint streaks and blemishes are visible on the image. The plate was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947, and its title was assigned by Library staff.
