A float for the American Child Health Association, photographed on May 1, 1924, is the subject of this picture. The association promoted children's health and disease prevention, and public parade displays like this one were a way to reach families who might not otherwise hear its advice. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the 1910s and 1920s, documented street life, public events, and civic campaigns, so the image offers a glimpse of how such causes were promoted. The glass negative shows streaks and surface blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which affects the finer detail.
