Unlike the many railroad views on this board, this one shows the poster winners of the American Railway Association on May 10, 1924. That title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative and has not been verified. The association was the railroad industry's trade organization, and poster contests of this kind were often used to promote the rails during years of growing competition from automobiles and trucks. The 4 by 5 inch glass negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and the faint streaks on its surface reflect the natural breakdown of the original coatings.
