Pershing's name sets this view apart: it records a parade held in honor of Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, on September 17, 1919, as the country moved from wartime back to peacetime. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, made and sold pictures of such public events, many for newspapers. The image survives as a glass negative, a format that captured fine detail but was fragile, and the streaks and blemishes visible on its coating come from age rather than from the event itself.
