The title "Heath's Ark" comes from a note the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it, so the subject is best approached with caution. The plate falls within the company's working span of roughly 1909 to 1932, a period when the Washington, D.C., firm photographed streets, buildings and events for public sale. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Look closely and you may notice streaks and blemishes, the natural result of the glass plate's coating deteriorating over time.
