A single bear standing in a zoo setting is the subject of this glass negative, and Library staff supplied the title because the original record does not name the zoo or the species. The National Photo Company was a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., that produced many views for postcards and tourist sales in the early twentieth century, and glass plates were a common format for that kind of work. The negative dates from somewhere between 1909 and 1932, and the record notes streaks and other blemishes caused by the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which can still be seen across the image.
