Shad fishing on the Potomac is one of the few pictures in this collection that places its subject on a river rather than in a street or a studio. Shad runs were a seasonal fixture on the Potomac for generations, and the spring catch drew fishermen, hauling crews and onlookers to the shoreline in numbers that made it a local event. The National Photo Company made thousands of glass negatives of Washington-area scenes in the early twentieth century, and this one likely reflects that broader effort to document daily life around the capital. The glass plate shows some streaking and surface wear from age, which is typical of negatives of this period.
