Rather than a place or event, this picture is identified by a person: Herbert E. French, photographer, a title drawn from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve. The glass plate dates from sometime between 1909 and 1932, and it came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Look closely for the streaks and blemishes across its surface, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that produced and kept the negatives, worked in the early twentieth century.
