Mlle. Violette Chantal appears here as a pianist, and the portrait comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that produced a large body of commercial and press portraits in the early twentieth century. The record gives the date as 1924 but notes that it was inferred from neighboring negatives, so the year should be treated as approximate, and the spelling of the name is likewise unverified. The image survives as a 4 by 5 inch glass negative, a format favored by studios of the period for its sharp detail. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original emulsion, which are part of the object's history.
