Four senators posed together for this December 1924 shot, which the National Photo Company recorded on a glass negative. The group includes Jesse H. Metcalf of Rhode Island and Charles Curtis of Kansas, who was then serving as Senate majority leader. The National Photo Company supplied news pictures of Washington officials and events in the 1910s and 1920s, and portraits like this one document the Capitol's political figures at the start of the 68th Congress's short session. The glass plate has visible streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of its original coating, which are part of the object's physical history.
