Senator Jesse H. Metcalf of Rhode Island is the subject here, photographed on December 1, 1924, according to a date recorded on the negative sleeve by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented politicians, officials and public events in the 1910s and 1920s. Metcalf, a Republican, had been elected to the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island in 1924, so the portrait captures a politician at the start of his term. The image survives as a glass negative, and its catalog notes point to streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its tones and detail.
