A wool manufacturer from Providence before he entered national politics, Jesse H. Metcalf is the subject of this portrait, dated December 1, 1924, shortly after his election to the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island. The image is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed officials, visitors and public events in the capital from the early 1900s through the 1930s. Streaks and blemishes on the negative come from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, which is common in glass plates of this age. The title comes from data the studio recorded, which has not been independently verified.
