Shad fishing on the Potomac is the subject here, a seasonal catch that drew crowds to the river's shores and shallows in the early twentieth century. American shad run up the Potomac each spring to spawn, and fishermen often hauled nets from the banks or from small boats, making the catch a social event as well as a livelihood. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio whose photographers documented Washington, D.C., and the surrounding region between about 1909 and 1932. The record notes that the title was supplied by the company itself and has not been independently verified, and some streaking and blemishes from the aging of the glass coating are visible.
