Four men, still unidentified, stand in this 1923 glass negative dated September 3, and the title was devised by Library staff because the original record names no one. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that made thousands of commercial and news pictures in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this one were common in that era, and their light-sensitive coatings often break down over time. Streaks and blemishes on the surface are visible here, the result of that natural deterioration rather than anything in the scene itself.
