This glass negative is titled for Sir Esme Howard, a British diplomat who served as ambassador to the United States from 1924 to 1930, though the record notes that the name comes from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of officials and public figures, and its glass plates were often used for newspaper and magazine reproduction. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates from this period and is worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
