This glass negative records the office of General John J. Pershing at the War Department in Washington, dated October 21, 1921. Pershing had become Army Chief of Staff that summer, after commanding American forces in France during the First World War, so the room would have been a center of the postwar peacetime Army. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, photographed the city's government offices and officials on glass plates like this one. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the surface, which result from the natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings.
